happy valentine's day

and to celebrate, a valentine's top ten list of girly romantic comedies. some movies had to be stricken from the list for one reason or another. too recent (never been kissed, 10 things i hate about you, how to lose a guy...or some just didn't quite fit the "cheesy romance" bill (can't hardly wait, much ado about nothing, shakespeare in love, father of the bride, steel magnolias, american president, girls just want to have fun, romancing the stone).

but here, without further ado, is my valentine's top ten girly romantic chick flicks. or something.

10. Gone with the Wind - because sometimes woman need to be manhandled and carried up the stairs. errr, wait. i mean....

9. Bridget Jones' Diary - this could have been higher in the list were it not for the bad taste still left in my mouth after seeing the sequel.

8. Dirty Dancing - "Nobody puts Baby in the corner." Damn right Swayze! Now teach me some of those hip thrust moves...

7. Pride and Prejudice - aren't dresses and bonnets and estates and horses romantic? yes, i thought so.

6. Sleepless in Seattle / You've Got Mail - these two movies only get one number because they're basically the same thing. but i say, who cares? if you've got a formula that works, stick to it.

5. Ever After - oh, Dougray Scott, where have you gone? come back please.

4. Sixteen Candles - oh, Jake, how I wish you had gone to Mt. Carmel so I could have gazed upon you every day in P.E. class.

3. While You Were Sleeping - because, well, really, who hasn't pretended to be engaged to a furry eyebrowed stranger in a coma and then fallen in love with his brother and family in the process? exactly.

2. Pretty Woman - yes, I KNOW it's about a hooker. and yes, I KNOW it's about a man buying a woman like merchandise and then saving her from her awful life on the streets. and I KNOW i'm not supposed to support such ideas. but goddamn, is julia roberts likable or what? yes, i will continue to watch this movie until i'm old and gray.

1. When Harry Met Sally - of course. no surprise here. i almost didn't include it because as far as "girly" and "chick flicks" go, this barely applies because most men i know actually enjoy this movie. nonetheless, it is the epitome of romatic comedy and it really doesn't get any better than this.
