netflix
the l.a. times just had an interesting story about netflix and the movies that different parts of the country are renting. turns out that netflix has a "local favorites" section that tells you what people are renting in your zip code. the results are fascinating:
- Beverly Hills - not surprising the snobs prefer the foreign (Ein Lied Von Liebe und Tod), the classic (Philadelphia Story), and the documentary (Sketches of Frank Gehry).
- Newport Beach in the O.C. is a bit more odd - This is Spinal Tap, a documentary on Bob Dylan, Season 3 of 24, and Sliding Doors. You heard me. The Gwyneth Paltrow movie from a zillion years ago. Keep in mind this is the current most popular list.
- Lawrence, Kansas - the midwest seems to be all over the place with Six Feet Under, Dr. Strangelove, and Veronica Mars.
- Las Vegas - perhaps my favorite because it's so predictably bad - Larry the Cable Guys' Git-R-Done, Bachelor Party Vegas, The Blue Collar Comedy Tour, and for some reason, Assassins.
- New York - no one loves New Yorkers as much as New Yorkers. some of their favorite movies include New York (a documentary series), New York Stories, Manhattan Murder Mystery, and Manhattan.
- Park City Utah - a film festival town but clearly they know how to keep it real too - Kinky Boots, The World's Fastest Indian, Just My Luck, and The Shaggy Dog.
- Pittsburgh - no one says middle america like Pittsburgh PA though. maybe this town isn't so bad. check out these hysterical choices - Legend: The Director's Cut (awesome), Monty Python and the Holy Grail (classic), American Graffiti: Collector's Edition (love it), NFL Superbowl XL (hysterical), and the always popular The Bituminous Coul Queens of Pennsylvania. For real.
