emergency landing
As mentioned before, there are many reasons I don't like to fly. None of which include fear of dying in a crash. I just don't think about it and it doesn't really freak me out. That's why on New Year's Eve when we were flying to LA and the pilot came on the intercom, I wasn't really worried. That was, of course, before he said we were making an emergency landing.
Emergency landing!
What?! For real? He calmly (extremely calmly) explained that one of the valves that gives fuel to the motor kept trying to close. He said that while now both engines were running, one may shut off. That concerned me a bit because planes are pretty large entities. If one side shut off, wouldn't that be a problem? The pilot said it would still be fine and that, "just to be safe" we were making an emergency landing. You have to understand that on flights I tend to try to knock myself out with dramamine. Then i proceed to bury my head against the window and not move for 5 hours. Literally. I never get up, barely change positions, never take any snacks or drinks, and keep my eyes closed (usually because I'm sleeping). I know, I know...but I'm serious. Not really a fun traveling companion. So when I hazily heard the pilot say this, my only reaction was to unbury my hand from underneath my blanket, and hold my husband's hand. Pretty calm reaction if you ask me. I kept my eyes closed and knew it would be totally fine because that nice pilot man was so calm. In a real emergency, he would be crying and cursing over the intercom, right? Right? In fact, the pilot said he only really mentioned the emergency landing because he wanted to warn us not to panic when we landed and saw all of the emergency vehicles. And he was right about that. The minute we touched down, I looked out the window and saw ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks, lights blazing, rushing down the runway with us.
It was certainly not cool but it was just like a scene out of a movie. Perhaps one of my favorite movies, Die Hard 2 or Con Air. Either way, it was the fastest I'd ever gotten into O'Hare airport.
