oscar noms 06

through the magic of tivo, i got to watch the oscar nominations "live" this morning and type madly as they read the names. that's right, i'm the nerdy type of person who will tivo the oscar nominations as they're announced at 5:30 a.m. and i decided to jot down my thoughts as i heard them. so that's my excuse for the lack of punctuation, grammar, or interesting comments in general. here they are:

supporting actress
- amy adams - sweet. she was good in 'junebug' and i liked her dress at the sag awards so this is a good red carpet addition.
- catherine keener - seriously? her job in 'capote' was to look dowdy and walk beside philip seymour hoffman. lame. but i enjoy her bohemian looks at awards shows so i'll give it up.
- frances mcdormand - wonder if she'll show up? i didn't see 'north country' but she's rad so i approve.
- rachel weisz - boring, boring, boring. she'll win and she'll look all pregnant and boring doing it.
- michelle williams - go dawson's, go dawson's, go dawson's. i wonder if she'll bring busy phillips as her date as she's done at every awards show this season. pick a good dress!

supporting actor
- george clooney - the love for this guy in hollywood is immense. syriana wasn't very good and he didn't really have THAT much to do but how can you hate the clooney?
- matt dillon - i cringe at the thought of hearing matt dillon's next movie say "oscar nominee matt dillon". horrible. so so wrong.
- paul giamatti - yay! so, the nomination is a couple years too late (hello sideways? american splendor?) but i hope he wins. he's sort of like an awkward dwarf. love it.
- jake gyllenhaal - hmm..interesting. didn't think he'd be nominated but i guess i'm glad he was. he was great in 'jarhead' and almost as good as heath ledger in 'brokeback'.
- william hurt - oh. my. god. i am outraged, that is the right word. not only was 'history of violence' not good but he was the WORST part about it. his performance was so awful that i still had a bad taste in my mouth 2 months later. horrible, horrible, horrible. and he's sort of an egotistic lame ass.

actress
- judi dench - come on people, you don't have to nominate her every time she's in a movie.
- felicity huffman - cool. she's rad. she's probably better than reese but reese will win because she's cute.
- keira knightley - do i hate her? do i love her? she walks a fine line. but i loved 'pride and prejudice' so i'm happy for it's one nomination.
- charlize theron - she totally has dirt on her face in this movie. and she totally has a working class accent. bravo, charlize, bravo.
- reese witherspoon - okay, reese, we all knew you'd get a nod. but for godssakes please find a dress that doesn't suck.

actor
- philip seymour hoffman - the best. love him.
- terrence howard - for 'hustle and flow'. at least not for 'crash'. has anyone noticed how nasally this guy's voice is?
- heath ledger - let the VERY awkward red carpet interviews begin!
- joaquin phoenix - he's not getting enough respect but i like you joaquin!
- david straitharn - loved him in sneakers. he was totally playing a blind guy then! in this movie he's only smoking a lot.

director
- ang lee - love this little asian man. he'll win.
- bennett miller - a first timer for capote. cool. though half the movie was oddly out of focus and i don't think it was a creative choice.
- paul haggis - 'crash' was horrible. haggis you are overrated.
- george clooney - people love the clooney!
- steven spielberg - this is some bullshit. he was nominated because he's spielberg and he stole and nomination from better people including 'walk the line'. bullshit.

original screenplay
- crash - hey, don't call me that racial slur! no, YOU don't call me that racial slur! why am i so racist? i don't know, why am I so racist? god this movie sucks. and it will win by a landslide.
- good night and good luck - clooney THIRD nomination. that's right people. er's clooney is nominated for acting, writing, and directing.
- matchpoint - woody allen is in love with scarlett johanasson and it's creeping me out.
- the squid and the whale - okay, i get it.
- syriana - BOO

adapted screenplay
- brokeback mountain - duh. it'll win.
- capote - pretty good. and written by an actor so that's pretty amazing. :)
- constant gardener - bad.
- history of violence - worse.
- munich - only because it's tony kushner.

best picture
- brokeback - i didn't even ADORE this movie but i hope it wins because it's the best of the bunch.
- capote - nice.
- crash - if this is a surprise upset win, i'll...well, i'll... i guess i won't do anything but curse.
- good night and good luck - a nice little movie but not big enough
- munich - see comments above about how shitty it is.

in other nominations (those that weren't televised) some things that jumped out at me...
'batman begins' was nominated for cinematography. interesting.
dolly parton was nominated for her original song from transamerica...and this year there were only 3 original song nominees (including "it's hard out here for a pimp" from hustle and flow. geez.)
john williams was nominated twice for his music in geisha and munich. another case of just having to do a movie to be nominated.

that is all. see you march 5th!
