Movies On TV That Make Me Put Down the Remote
This all started when one of my favorite tv writers wrote an article on Midnight Run and all of it's glory. He said it was one of the movies he just had to watch if it was on TV. I agree, though sadly that movie didn't make my list before it's never on TV!
The list below contains movies that are constantly on TV and that qualify as a "remote-control stopping" phenomenon. This is especially close to my heart because I love to go to sleep with the TV on. But not any TV...for some reason I usually pick movies and usually pick movies I have seen a billion times so I don't have to be looking at the screen to follow along. And generally they are not huge action movies because they are too noisy. They are certainly not movies I would call "excellent" (I loved Eternal Sunshine but I haven't been able to get through it on TV), or even movies that I really liked when I first saw them. John often tries to flip through the on-screen guide and guess which channel I'm going to leave it on. He's usually right about 90% of the time. I am predictable.
TOP 20 MOVIES ON TV THAT MAKE ME PUT DOWN THE REMOTE
20. Days of Thunder - I refuse to believe that Tom Cruise appeals to me so I think there's something about Roddy and Cole Trickle racing rental cars that gets me every time.
19. Just One of the Guys - A terrible movie with an unbelievable premise and it's so fun to watch.
18. Can't Hardly Wait - Filled with amazing C-List actors (Ethan Embry, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Seth Green, etc), this is one of the only recent teen movies that is actually good.
17. Kill Bill - Either volume will do...Tarantino just clearly loves his Uma kicking ass that he makes me love it too.
16. Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead - Regardless of the number of viewings, I'm still amazed at how a teen Christina Applegate can pretend to be an adult, throw a good party, and turn uniforms into sweet outfits. Plus, "the dishes are done dude."
15. Die Hard - My preference is for #1 but truly I'll watch Bruce Willis act cocky in any installment.
14. 10 Things I Hate About You - Awww, Heath Ledger totally sings and dances for Julia Stiles! The mean, sarcastic girl gets the guy!
13. Pride and Prejudice - I love Mr. Darcy. Always have, always will. I could watch Keira Knightley (or Jennifer Ehle) fall in love with him every day.
12. Princess Diaries - I guess ugly duckling transformations never get old.
11. Home Alone - This movie just seems like a warm cozy cup of cocoa when I flip it on.
10. Sweet Home Alabama - I didn't even like this movie at first but I'll be damned if Josh Lucas doesn't draw me in every time.
9. You've Got Mail - A classic TBS staple. Love it.
8. The Devil Wears Prada - For the past month, HBO has been running this constantly and I find myself sucked in even though I didn't adore it the first time I saw it in the theater. Go figure.
7. Groundhog Day - A movie that repeats over and over again as I watch it over and over again.
6. While You Were Sleeping - The only movie to make Bill Pullman adorable.
5. Pretty Woman - A staple of basic cable. Sure, there's no cussing or sex, but there's still Julia and her red hair singing "Kiss".
4. Dirty Dancing - On last night. I fell asleep before Jennifer Grey even got the chance to finish "It was the summer of..."
3. American President - Perhaps TNT's favorite movie of all time. Maybe because people like me watch it every time.
2. Overboard - Man, this movie was on over the weekend and it is so damn awesome. Watched it from minute one to the end.
1. The Money Pit - Yeah, so The Shawshank Redemption was too obvious. But The Money Pit, which thank god they play constantly, is beyond enjoyable. If you need to flush two hours down the toilet while lazing about on the couch, this is the best movie for the job.
