"If you want to destroy my sweater...

So Weezer says all you have to do is hold this thread as I walk away. My sweater didn't unravel in Italy but it did disappear.

It started on our first night in Florence. We got to our apartment (yes, we stayed in apartments rather than hotels) in the late afternoon. We had read about a good restaurant that we wanted to try so we set out from the apartment with our keys and started to explore the city. After about an hour we headed to this restaurant called "Il Latini". As we rounded the corner we saw a group of people huddled around a doorway. Bad sign. We found that the restaurant was already full about 30 minutes after it opened and all these people were waiting for a table. And when I say "waiting" I mean that there was no list with names, no line, no order...just a group huddled outside the door staring at the seated patrons inside eating delicious food. My friend and I decided that we had nothing else to do and this place was clearly worth it, so we decided to wait. We learned a few things... 1. we could tell the tables inside were family-style seating...we were going to sit next to strangers. 2. i really didn't want to sit next to the silent grumpy old men who were standing next to us. 3. the local sitting at the bar inside had the biggest nose i'd ever seen. for real. like "roxanne"/steve martin big. the picture doesn't capture it, but check it out:

So during the HOUR we waited, one of the waiters kept bringing out free glasses of white wine. Two glasses down, we were finally ushered inside where we were seated with, you guessed it, the two grumpy men. Turns out this was the best thing to happen to us all trip. Jerome and Mario were 50 or 60 year old Parisians. The minute we all sat down their frowns turned upside down. After the introductions (and my already tipsy demeanor) they thought it would be great if we all got drunk. So with a steady supply of red wine always on the table, the alcohol started flowing. A quick note about the restaurant...it was the type of place where the waiter just asked if you felt like some appetizers...if you felt like pasta...then meat...etc. My favorite type of place. As everyone got more and more drunk, a few things happened. Our waiter clearly was loving our table because we were fun. And, more importantly, our French friends began to tell some funny stories. Clearly these two men were gay, but mid-way through the meal, Jerome felt the need to whisper to my friend, "you know, Mario and I are homosexuals. We have been together for 25 years." Ahh, adorable. He then proceeded to tell us about his trip to San Francisco in 1970 where he bought a lovely "glass decoration" that turned out to be a bong that some hippie helped him smoke his first weed in and then he drove around in a pink cadillac all night where he thought he was flying. Imagine that story in a broken drunk French accent. Our sweet dinner party:

The night carried on, the volume got louder, and the dessert limoncello came. The Frenchmen were tired so they got their bill and left. The owner (typical big Italian guy sitting in the back corner) pulled our waiter over and gestured towards our table. Out came another shot of limoncello...and grappa...and muscat. My god. This is where everything gets very hazy. Somehow someone took about 30 pictures of me and my friend. Most people tell me that it must have been me, holding my arm out. I don't believe it but it may be true. There were also pictures of us with our funny waiter, Alessandro. Equally awesome.

Turns out we stayed until closing but the best part was when the bill came. We celebrated because although we had drank and eaten more than our French partners, our bill was half the price. Wow. Sometimes it's awesome to be a woman. At this point, I stop remembering things clearly because I have mixed too many types of alcohols. I know not to mix but apparently that rule didn't follow me to Italy. My friend is totally used to mixing and she can handle it so, while she was drunk, I think she was aware. As the restaurant was closing, our waiter and some of the other waitstaff invited us to a bar where they were getting a drink. Sure, why not? Well, I'll tell you why. Because I probably didn't need to add two rum and cokes to my beverage mix. But I did. I remember three things total from the bar portion of the night. 1. I was freezing walking to the bar so I put on my sweater but it was hot in the bar so I took it off. 2. I yelled at the Italians for thinking Cameron Diaz was hot because I screamed that her face was full of acne (not my proudest moment). And 3. I abruptly got up from the table at some point, walked outside and crouched in some building doorway for about 5 minutes because I was so dizzy. Not sure why I didn't go to the bathroom but there you go. I went back inside and basically grabbed my friend and said I had to go. She obliged and I left without saying goodbye to these people who had just bought us all these drinks. Oh well. My friend says she grabbed my sweater from the table and handed it to me. She thinks I tied it around my waist.

From there we realized we had to get "home" to an apartment we had never walked home to before. Ever. Guess what? We got lost. Big time. God knows where we were but I wasn't making sense. I grabbed the map from my friend yelling about how great my sense of direction was and proceeded to lead us in the complete wrong direction. My friend eventually got us home and in door #1 off the street. Door #2 that lead into our floor was not as easy. Of course we both had to go to the bathroom and it was 3am and the goddamn key wasn't working. She tried it many times, I tried it many times, and to no avail. Goddamnit. I was done so I sat on the stairs and told her that she had to knock on the landlord's door upstairs. I believe I demanded it. After realizing we were going to have to sleep in the stairwell, she knocked on the landlord's door. Down he came, picked up the key, and immediately opened the door. Shit. We were idiots. (Obviously). We thanked him, I apparently drunkenly told him that our internet wasn't working (at 3AM?! What was he to do?!) and I fell into bed.

When I woke up at 1pm the next day, I was so so so goddamn hungover it was not funny. I couldn't leave the apartment for hours and my friend had to go out to get me juice and fruit. The most drunk I'd been in 10 years of drinking. And the saddest part... I couldn't find my sweater. Dammit. I had dropped it in our 40 minute quest to find home. My favorite favorite black sweater that I had had for 8 years was now part of the Firenze art scene. Son of a bitch. Still, it was WAYYY worth it.

st. patty's day...the 50 year old version

Yesterday was St. Patty's day but when I made my plans a month ago, I had no idea. I went to a champagne tasting/class at the local fancy Wine House with my friend. I love champagne and bubbles so I thought it sounded like a good time. The kids in my office thought I sounded like a 50 year old. Either way.

The first five minutes scared the hell out of me because it did skew a little older (though not senior citizen) and we did certainly start by smelling the glasses and people throwing out the usual "nose" descriptions - "peachy", "apricot", "caramel", etc. In that first few minutes I really had to hold back the laughter because I thought I was going to insult all of these people. But after two glasses, I was into it (no surprise). Had some delicious champagnes and sparkling wines, all of which I can't afford. Even started volunteering my own answers... "it smells like sour patch kids!" (it did!!!)

Anyways, I left drunk and happy and what more can you ask for on St. Patty's day?

go sox!

Just got back from a 48 hour whirlwind trip to Boston this past weekend. I gotta say, though I don't think I could move to the east coast, I really love the people and the towns and the general east-coast flavor. We happened to be there during post-season Red Sox fever so it was fun to hang out in the bars and experience the madness. We were there for a wedding though... a wedding with controversy swirling around it but I won't go into that. Sadly, 99.9% of the readers of this blog do not know this group of friends so I won't post too many pictures. BUT, you do know ME and I have to admit that this wedding destroyed me. Destroyed me in so many ways. First, I was completely drunk. (But in a fun way of course.) The initial long line at the bar caused me to double fist (don't judge...there were people triple fisting) and the 3-hour cocktail "hour" really flew by. Then, even through my drunken numbness, my awesome $20 red Target heels started to kill so I had to discard them about 4 hours in. Sadly though, being barefoot and dancing and wandering the streets of Boston to get to the after-party apparently injured me. I woke up the next morning with huge bruises on the soles of my feet, sore calves, blisters for days, scraped up elbows and black and blue arms. Of course, no memory of how I got them. I believe I danced on chairs, had phone conversations I can't recall, and made a lot of new "best friends".

My go-to drunk photo face seems to be mouth wide open, screaming at the camera.

stevin wedding

As previously promised, here are some pictures from last weekend's festivities in Santa Barbara and Los Olivos. One of the PQ Posse's own got married in a gorgeous ceremony to a guy we sort of have grown to love.

Before their love could be sealed by God though, there had to be a bar night. A dangerous move but it worked out. Maybe even a smart move because after the gallons of alcohol that everyone drank at the bar, by the time the wedding rolled around, I didn't have a single drink. The bar was trouble to begin with because Marah was there and she's quite a bad influence....
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Then somewhere along the way this happened...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Good times were had by all...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

That is, until the hiccups set in. There's nothing worse than having the hiccups when you are drunk. Of course, everyone had advice...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

And when that didn't work, I was told plugging your left ear would...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Sadly, my hazy state that night doesn't allow me to remember which method actually worked. But it did work and I was happy. Happy until the groom punched me out of course...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

At the time I didn't suspect that I would have a hangover the next morning (I did) but, looking back, this picture (taken 5 minutes before closing) really says it all...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

The day of the wedding I put on my Team Bride bedazzled tank and went at it. And, really, if you've never worn a hot pink bedazzled tank top, you haven't lived...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

The setting was gorgeous...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

...and the PQ Posse was in full effect...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

But the real stars were the gorgeous bride and groom...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Well, if you don't count Simon and his family...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

You could sort of say that the "friend crowd" made a scene...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

...but with sexiness like this, can you blame us?
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

The night was such a success that somebody passed out in the hotel while holding a half-eaten ice cream cone that had been shoplifted earlier....

Well done, Stevin. Well done.

cape cod

I've been meaning to post since I returned from Cape Cod on Monday but with high school graduations and grandparents and parties, life has gotten in the way. But I did get to spend 3 fantastic days in Cape Cod in a beach house with 6 other amazing people that I don't get to see very often. It was my first time in Cape Cod and it was totally adorable. The wedding we were there for was at this gorgeous site. So gorgeous that I totally forgot to take a single photo while I was there. Surprisingly though, there were many pictures taken on the dance floor. There was impromptu karaoke, manic break dancing, Yankee hat bashing, and pole stands by a 6'4" guy (!!)
The night started out innocent enough...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

But then of course the beer started flowing...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Ties were loosened and improvised...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

And then they were tied together...
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

All of this action then led to this unfortunate photo which depicts a little bit of back-sweat by someone who is near and dear to me.
Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Clearly a great time was had by all and I am happy that two of my favorite people are now married and bound together for all of eternity. Or something.

Vegas bachelorette weekend

Have you been to Vegas recently? Have you? Because it's out of control. Seriously. That city must RAKE in the cash because every single hotel is packed. Really packed. Plus, when an orange juice costs $7.50 and a margarita is $16 bucks, you know someone is making a lot of money. ("16 dollars." "Oh, 8 dollars each? That's great!" "No, 16 bucks a piece." "Shit.")

Six of us leaving from LA piled into the party van and headed for Vegas. I added a few special touches to my mom's van to update it a bit...

Photo Hosted at Buzznet

With a flying flag, decals like "DANGER! Girls on the Loose!", caution tape that read "Caution! Wild girls!", and pink bumper streamers that read "Hot to Trot", the van got a bit of attention on the freeway. There were some amazing looks and finger gestures that I won't discuss because I'm a lady.

After our arrival at the Bellagio we hit the pool and then hit the gelato place. (Gelato trip #1) Both were excellent. Then it was time for dinner and I'm sure the town didn't know what to expect when this group hit the streets...

Photo Hosted at Buzznet

That's one sexy group of girls. Of course, the PQ Posse tried to capture our sexiness on film but I'm not sure we suceeded.

Photo Hosted at Buzznet

The bride-to-be clearly equates surprise and outrage with sexy which may mean that I have some questions for Fatso.

Our new best friend Jumanji at the Bellagio not only provided Stacey with a magnum condom, but he also ushered us into "Light" - the nightclub at the hotel. Once we were past the red velvet ropes and bouncer with an ear piece, we took a long escalator up to the club because I guess that's how cool people like to roll...at a high altitude. (Someone fact check this for me please).

Photo Hosted at Buzznet

The club was nice enough to have great music, strobe lights, bubbles, and stripper poles waiting for us. You don't get the pole dance pictures because you weren't there. But there were some amazing dances. I believe I took about 50 photos on the dance floor in what I like to call my "snap pictures while dancing and drinking" style. I'm also into self portraits and some of them actually came out. Don't know how my arms are so long...

Photo Hosted at Buzznet

The DJ at the club was actually awesome and everyone was immediately dancing. After a few pre-drinks at the bar, I was feeling it. Did I mention there were good songs?

Photo Hosted at Buzznet

Don't let that picture fool you. Carolyn really loves my singing.

You know who else loves singing? Well, loves everything in general judging by this picture. Stacey. Our very own bachelorette.

Photo Hosted at Buzznet

A good time was had by all. That's all I'm pretty much trying to say. Sure, the next morning brought a hangover for me but it was totally worth it. In retrospect, it was probably that last drink that I didn't want but that I had to chug to try to get rid of my hiccups. (FYI, I failed). Looking through my pictures in the morning I figured out that maybe I actually was drunk the night before. Otherwise, there would be NO rational explanation for this.

Photo Hosted at Buzznet

I was really feeling that song. Thank you Vegas.

six degrees

This is Marah. After 2 1/2 drinks i promised to blog about our dinner because hey, that's what people do nowadays. Last night, with the hazy head, I really wanted to start my post with this picture. But now, as clearer thoughts are prevailing, I have decided not to. Sort of.

Anyways, M and I have good luck with celebrity sightings. One of our most recent meals was in the middle of Portland in an empty restaurant at 3pm. That's when Sean Penn sat down next to us. Cut to last night where we're sitting all cramped in a tiny little room...the type where the tables are right in a row and you are basically sitting next to strangers and listening to their every word. That's when Kevin Bacon sits down next to M. M doesn't notice, perhaps because she doesn't turn her head all the way to the right. But, I notice because I can't help but see him when I'm staring at M. About 30 seconds after he sits down, I make a lame tipsy move of crashing my plates together and causing a clatter. Of course, I'm embarassed because I assume the Bacon thinks that I am so flustered in his presence that I can't control my bread plate and my salad plate. Meanwhile, M's had two cocktails and is oblivious to the Bacon so she just thinks I'm a nutcase. When she finally noticed him though, her reaction was pretty sweet. Probably because about 2 minutes before he sat down, she was going on about how botox-ed and terrible Kyra Sedgwick looked at the GGs. Yeah, that's his wife. That would not have been good because he would have heard. I guess we should be more sensitive when bagging on famous people.

Not.

Bottom line, Bacon looks good. Real good. Insanely young. And the voice of 'Footloose' was pretty sweet in person. Penn, Bacon...who's next?

party like it's 1996

this weekend was my glorious 10 year high school reunion and it was a doozy. i had pictured a more sedate sit-down affair where people chatted and caught up with one another and tried to make it sound like they had awesome lives. boy, was i wrong. there was no time for any of that because it was a loud drunken dancing brawl. lots of drinks, lots of hugs, lots of "HI!!!", and then moving on. good times. i recommend it to everyone. and now, a pictorial.

SOBER...OKAY, WELL...TIPSY.

THREE DRINKS IN.

WISHING MY HUSBAND A HAPPY ANNIVERSARY.

DRUNK.

DELUSIONAL, "DANCING", AND PROBABLY CONSIDERED HAMMERED.

bachelorette weekend #2

the pq posse was off to palm springs this weekend to celebrate my upcoming nuptials as well as taryn's. fun was had by all. we stayed in the hotel where trista and ryan got married which has really always been my dream. palm springs was pur-ty and we enjoyed sitting by the pool all weekend. palm springs was filled with a surprising number of middle age men who seem to hit on you by giving you their salsa. that and oddly leaning in on our table which the hope of getting invited over. i don't think so buddy.

palm springs

there was a bit of "sex in the city" and a bit of "reservoir dogs". either way, heads were turning...

PA posse

everyone's heard of the PQ posse (well, most everyone) but john's PA posse was in town this past weekend and i got to witness a different kind of posse craziness. this one revolved around boy things and football and drinking. lots and lots of drinking. we were at a wedding in san diego and boy, can east-coasters drink. an open bar does nothing to curb this...and neither does a lack of food. so, for instance, 10 johnny walkers without a real dinner could lead one guest to actually lose his vision and almost lose his ability to remain vertical. of course, in this inebriated state, he still managed to remember every single word of sinatra's 'my way' and sang it with gusto in front of 100 guests. i think the real classy moment was when someone's date (a trashy pretty soriority girl who could not have been more than 19) actually went up to the groom's mom and said 'yeah, i almost did your son. i could have. and i would have been way nicer to him than [the bride].' she was promptly thrown out.

lessons i take away for my own wedding...
- serve a real meal. we don't need drunken vomiting.
- don't let the dj play any edwin mc cain or some shit.
- actually have the bride and groom cut the cake and make sure everyone gets some. (yes, i'm still pissed i didn't get to try the chocolate cake)
- have enough tables/chairs for everyone. sure i like standing and mingling but i didn't enjoy holding my purse for 4 hours.
- don't let the groom roll his eyes and make faces during the ceremony.
- allow bubba to sing 'brandy' and moomaw to sing 'my way'.
- don't wear high heels.

lesson for the day

now listen up kids, because i'm only going to say this once...

it is NEVER a good idea to drink heavily on a 'school night'. last night 5 stoli vodka and diet cokes seemed like a good idea on an empty stomach.
this morning when i had to get to work at 7:45am i decided that it maybe wasn't such a good idea. there's really nothing like spending a friday morning crouched in a bathroom stall at work just praying that you throw up. alas, my prayers were not heard and i remain completely nauseated and hungover.

please someone rescue me from this hell. before i throw up on my boss.

naughty

so yeah, san francisco was pretty fun.
and yeah, i still feel bad for firing the assistant but now i'm happier without him here.

but, more importantly, i woke up this morning and started thinking about what i did last night. it was a little hazy. i know i went to azami to eat the best sushi in the world. i know that it was a special occasion because it was sanelibs' birthday. i remember savoring the yellowtail and albacore and snapper and halibut and everything else. i remember loving the first couple shots of warm sake. and that's when it gets a little fuzzy.

we finished the warm sake and then discovered this magical cold sake that was milky and wonderful and tasty. finished that too. then we got in kevin's car and he started driving home. he stopped at a red light and didn't turn right because he thought this bicycle was going to cross the street. so he wasn't making a right on red. but who cares? that's when this asshole in an SUV behind him honked. in a belligerent move that i learned from my dear fiance, i flung up my arm and flipped the guy off through the rear window. but it was so casual and brief...whatever. then we get to the next turn and this SUV with jet ski bumper stickers and this asshole inside wearing a hawaiian shirt says, "yo, did you just flip me off?" brian, drunk himself and smoking a cigarette, says, "no way man." kevin, realized that he could probably take this jerk-off, says, "what if we did? what are you going to do about it?" (i have a feeling at this point that kevin was also a little buzzed from the many beers and sake but as he was my designated driver, i refuse to hypothesize.) as they got worked up i felt it was only fair to tell them that, yes, indeed, i did give the guy the finger. but he totally deserved it. and who pulls people over to the side of the road to confront them about it? sort of makes me think twice about throwing up my finger so quickly when i'm all alone in the car. without two big, strong men with me. okay, at least two men with me.

i am officially old

old people can't drink without getting a hangover. well, i think that's me now. last night i got drunk i went to the 'bring your own alcohol' restaurant with club hump and proceeded to get drunk on a wednesday night. then in a show of even greater stupidity, i went home, opened another bottle of red wine (a good idea at the time), and drank half the bottle. i was feeling pretty great. then i went to sleep. this morning my head is KILLING me. i barely made it into work. i knew it wasn't going to be a good day when i just stood in the shower for 30 minutes, not moving, and grasping a bottle of water so i could take sips of it while i was in the shower. not good.

oh headache, when will you leave me?

"follow the day and reach for the SUN!"

the funny thing about the strangers surrounding you in public places, is that they can’t hear what’s going on inside my head. for instance, at the airport this last weekend, i really really thought that i was going to throw up. i don’t know what it was, maybe the tons of alcohol i drank, maybe the enormous amount of cigarette smoke i inhaled, maybe the sleep deprivation, or maybe, just maybe, the turbulence on the flight. either way, i felt like puking. so clutching my little white complimentary barf bag in one hand, i knew that i had to fight the urge and the only way to do so was to listen to polyphonic spree. that is, scream/sing along to polyphonic’s ‘light and day’ in my head. and it’s so funny because i was really belting it. the volume in my head was turned to 11, if ya know what i mean. but the people around me had no idea. they were probably just appalled at the dirty-haired, glasses-wearing, no makeup, pale, sick, frowning girl with a blanket sitting next to them on a plane. they had no idea that a rad-ass stereo was kicking it on high volume in my head. i guess it’s their loss. but if i’m screaming along to polyphonic spree in my head, what’s going on in theirs?

start your betting...

is it wrong to bet on your friends? more specifically, to bet when your friend is going to puke? at a party the other night, a bunch of my friends witnessed our female friend getting more and more drunk. of course, who could blame her with all of the jello shots, coronas, margaritas, and chocolate martinis that she was downing. now, we all know that this girl is a puker. i've seen her puke on a pool patio, in a strange shower, and various other places. don't get me wrong. i've done my fair share of puking. but around midnight at this particular party, she seemed to start exhibiting the signs of upcoming pukedom. the signs were all there... the shoes came off, the staggering started, the glasses got lost, the voice got louder, a random hookup occurred and the hair got messed up, and the eyes started looking heavier and heavier. so we started taking bets. tom had 1:00, i took 1:45, and john took 2:00am. he had more confidence in her than anyone else. the point isn't when she vomited. the real question is whether or not this was wrong. since i'm generally a sarcastic and bitchy friend, i say BET ON. good times. but then again, i'm not very nice.

kev's birthday fun

thank you to the exceptional group of people last night who joined me for sushi and drinks in honor of kevin's birthday. who knew that you can save a lot of money at azami by mainly buying sake and filling up on that, rather than expensive things like 'albacore' and 'yellowtail'. who needs that stuff? and thank you very much for introducing me to the joys of the "mind-eraser". this wonderful drink/shot is a tasty blend of alcohols that somehow culminates in a chocolate soda taste. yum! yummy but also dangerous. mixing sake, captain and cokes, and a mind-eraser isn't a good thing. though it's apparently better than mixing sake, sapporo, guinness, and a mind-eraser. a big SORRY goes out to a certain birthday boy who happened to get sick last night. i hope he had fun though and enjoyed himself.

an age-old question

Ever wonder what's your comfort cocktail? well, thank god there's emode.com to answer these kinds of burning questions. what did emode say about me? check it out....

"Lisa, you're a Comfort Colada
Being with you is like taking a vacation. When it comes right down to it, you're good-hearted, smooth, and just the right amount of sweet. Chances are you're the first call people make when they need someone to cheer them up or when they want someone to celebrate with. You're supportive, encouraging, and know how to have a good time."

it's amazing how none of these quizzes ever say 'you're a jackass who people hate to be around.' i want to make a website like that.

sayonara to alcohol

well, not really goodbye forever. but i've set a goal for myself....no drinking for the next two weeks. just to see. i figured, hell, anyone should be able to not drink for two weeks, right? if not, i'm an alcoholic. but i can already tell you that on day two, it's been difficult. passing up sake at sushi? very very hard. but i did it. i wasn't as loud and funny as i usually am, but i did it. (do you ever worry that the drunk "fun-you" is way better than the "sober-you"? well, you should. it's probably true.) and then i also realized that going to a bar and not getting a drink really isn't that entertaining. how do the non-drinkers i know do it? if i were them i wouldn't even bother going to bars at all. which would completely shut down my social life, but that's too bad. after two weeks i've definitely got to at least get back to some rum and diet coke. that's low-cal, right?

sake is the devil's drink

sushi is the best. can we all agree? but, man, i am a sucker for sake. it is so wonderful. the warmth washes over you and you feel all toasty and "peaceful" as brian likes to say. a seductive feeling, no? well, last night it was so seductive that i proceeded to have about 9 or 10 sakes in an hour. it wasn't long till i was intoxicated and that was made obvious by the spilling of the sake onto my lap, the spraying of scalding hot sake into my eye, and the frank conversation about sex. isn't drunkenness grand? in honor of this timeless tradition, i've compiled a list of things that happen to me when i'm drunk so you'll know all the signs.
WHEN I'M DRUNK I....
- talk more
- talk louder
- talk faster
- talk about people i hate
- am really nice to people i don't usually like (ie girls)
- am brutally honest (some people would say 'mean') to people i love
- tell it like it is
