dark days

it's gloomy out. foggy and drizzly. ordinarily a day i'd love to be curled up on the couch watching the newly released 'grey's anatomy' dvd. of course, i'm not at home, i'm at work. no one wants to constantly hear how much someone's job sucks so i won't go into that. but my near breakdowns at work have been a sight to see. there are my classic tells. the covering of the face with the hands constantly, the playing with the hair in a nervous way, the welling of the tears, the endless stream of "f*&%'s" and curse words, the snapping back at co-workers... it's ugly and i hate it. i can't sleep because i wake up in the middle of the night stressed out about things. all this over a totally piece of crap movie. why in the world am i doing this again? oh yeah, the cool people i get to work with. clearly my near breakdowns have been noticed because i've gotten three gifts in the past three days. and here's where we come to the happy part. first i got a huge basket of cookies, brownies, and muffins. damn they were good. then came the biggest bouquet of roses and lilies i've ever seen. they're smelling up the entire office and it's delightful. and then one of my favorite people bought me the most expensive bottle of italian lotion i've ever had the pleasure of slathering. wow. i don't love lotion but let me tell you about $100 a bottle lotion. it's delightful.

fall is in the air?

bullshit. fall is most definitely not in the air. my local starbucks is trying to tell me that autumn has arrived by making me pumpkin spice lattes. which, obviously, are delicious. but the problem is that it is miserably hot here. oppressively hot. it was so nice for a month but now we're back to hellish this past weekend. so that made my pumpkin latte taste a tiny bit less sweet. sad. despite the heat, my mood was brightened by the presence of ken and leigh. quality people.

in other news, only 16 days until the premiere of 'grey's anatomy'.

it's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes

i thought i'd borrow the lyrics of one of the classic songs of our generation to share with you a story of heat and sweat. it's not pretty. sure, every place in the country is hot right now. and sure, maybe even it's more humid where you are. but here's the thing...LA is not prepared for this type of weather. no one i know has air conditioning in their house. no one. so that means that during the day you're sweating just sitting on your couch and at night there are no amount of fans that can cool you down. oh, and guess what? LA is never this hot so most of the restaurants are not air-conditioned. they have a ton of outdoor patio seating though. i guess we could just walk around a mall...oh wait, we don't have indoor malls. dammit!

the past two mornings i've taken two showers. the first one i wash my hair. then i get out and blow dry my hair. then, after that, because i am overheating and dripping with sweat, i throw on a shower cap and take a cold shower. good times. the good news is that i'm the cleanest i've ever been.

p.s. happy getting old day fatso. we love you.

baby it's cold outside

no, really. it's really really cold. and not just for southern california. it's like an actual cold. the past couple of mornings when i've gotten up early to go for a jog, i'm had to wear gloves. you heard me...GLOVES. that's because the time that i didn't wear them this week, my fingers were frozen and numb and i thought the pain was going to kill me. then yesterday morning i get up and go by all of these front yards. it looked like someone had spray painted the front grass. i thought, man, we really do live in a bad neighborhood...who would spray paint the grass a greyish white? then i looked closer. yup, it was frost. the grass and weeds all had frost on them. they were frozen. being a southern california girl, i was completely fascinated. so i stopped, took off my gloves, and proceeded to rub the ice off of some grass. it was lovely. and of course, in the grand tradition of me being cold, when i got dressed this morning i put on some long johns (thermal underwear?) under my jeans. then i put a long sleeve shirt on under my sweater. and then a scarf. and then a jacket. and actually, i'm not that cold at work now. sure, my portable heater is turned on full blast, but i might just be comfortable.
